电子邮件(diàn zǐ yóu jiàn) - email in Mandarin

电子邮件 (diàn zǐ yóu jiàn) is email, built from 电子 (diàn zǐ, electronic) plus 邮件 (yóu jiàn, mail, post). It is the full formal term, the one used in writing, in software, and in GCSE mark schemes, even though everyday speech usually shortens it.

That shortening matters for listening practice: most speakers just say 邮件 (yóu jiàn) once email is clear from context, the same way English speakers drop "electronic" from "email" without ever having said it. Hearing 邮件 (yóu jiàn) alone should not throw a learner who has only met the full form on a page.

电子邮件 (diàn zǐ yóu jiàn) is counted with 封 (fēng), the measure word for sealed items like letters: 一封电子邮件 (yì fēng diàn zǐ yóu jiàn), "an email", 这封电子邮件 (zhè fēng diàn zǐ yóu jiàn), "this email". Reaching for the generic 个 (gè) instead is a common slip, since English needs no measure word for "an email" at all.
