面试(miàn shì) - job interview in Mandarin

面试 (miànshì) is a job interview, or the verb "to interview". 面 (miàn) means "face" and 试 (shì) means "to test, to try", so the compound is literally "a face-to-face test", a neat description of what a job interview actually is.

It works as both noun and verb without changing form: 我有一个面试 (wǒ yǒu yí ge miànshì), "I have an interview", and 公司面试了我 (gōngsī miànshì le wǒ), "the company interviewed me", are both correct. The person doing the interviewing is 面试官 (miànshìguān), the interviewer.

Do not confuse 面试 with 考试 (kǎoshì), a written or academic exam: 面试 is specifically the spoken, in-person kind, whether for a 工作 (gōngzuò, from gong1-zuo4), job, or a university place. The measure word is 个 (gè), as in 一个面试 (yí ge miànshì), "one interview".
