Он, она, оно: every noun has a gender
The ending tells you: a consonant is masculine (), -а and -я are feminine (), -о and -е neuter (). And , , follow it.
The short version
The last letter tells you the gender
, , (moy stol, moya kniga, moyo okno)
Why?Hide
A consonant or -й at the end means masculine, -а or -я feminine, -о or -е neuter. That covers most Russian nouns. The exceptions are nouns in a soft sign, which can be either ( is masculine, feminine), and men in -а: and take , not .
Every Russian noun is masculine, feminine or neuter, and you can almost always read the gender off the last letter. Gender matters because the words that go with a noun agree with it: (my table), (my book), (my window).
my table
my book
my window
Masculine: a consonant or -й
A noun that ends in a consonant is masculine. So is a noun ending in -й.
| Russian | say it | English |
|---|---|---|
| stol | table |
| dom | house |
| kot | cat (tom) |
| sosed | neighbour |
| divan | sofa |
| zhurnal | magazine |
| muzey | museum |
.- This is my house.
This is the biggest group, and the dictionary form of most of these words is the bare stem, with no ending at all.
Feminine: -а and -я
A noun ending in -а or -я is feminine, unless it names a man.
| Russian | say it | English |
|---|---|---|
| kniga | book |
| mama | mum |
| koshka | cat |
| kukhnya | kitchen |
| nedelya | week |
| statya | article |
.- This is my mum.
Neuter: -о and -е
A noun ending in -о or -е is neuter. Neuter is the smallest group, and it holds a lot of things and very few people.
| Russian | say it | English |
|---|---|---|
| okno | window |
| pismo | letter |
| slovo | word |
| more | sea |
.- This is my letter.
There is also a tiny group in -мя, and two of its members are common: (name) and (time). They end in -я but are neuter:
!- What a beautiful name!
