Ch 25 · Lesson 17

Making a complaint

Something is wrong and you want it put right. Firm, polite and effective.

Why these go together

The trick Spanish uses for a polite request is to step back in time: (I wanted) and (I would like) sound softer than , so the complaint lands as a request rather than a demand. You have just met : this is its everyday use.

  • reclamación.

I would like to make a complaint.

Literally: I wanted to make a complaint

  • .

    This does not work.

  • .

It is not what I ordered.

  • ¿ ?

Can you give me a refund?

Literally: can you give me back the money

  • .

I would like to speak to the manager.

  • .

I have been waiting for an hour.

Literally: I carry an hour waiting
