Ch 46 · Lesson 19

in- or des-?

Spanish has two ways to say not, and they split by word type.

The rule

Spanish negates most ADJECTIVES with in-: , , inseguro. It negates VERBS with -: , , and so do many participles built off them: . Adjectives in -ble take in- even from a verb (), and a few plain adjectives take des- (deshonesto, desigual), so treat this as the default, not a law. in- becomes im- in front of p and b (, imborrable), - in front of l () and - in front of r, doubling it (irreal).
