el or él?
The accent changes nothing you can hear, and everything you mean.
The rule
This accent does not mark stress, it separates two different words. el is the article and él is the pronoun he. The same trick runs through tu and tú, mi and mí, si and sí, mas and más, se and sé. Spanish calls it the tilde diacrítica, and it is the one place where an accent carries meaning rather than pronunciation.
