Swap sayings with your partner
Every language has its refranes. Trade one with your tandem partner and see if English has a match.
In your next exchange (on Conversation Exchange or Tandem), bring a Spanish refrán you have learned, explain in Spanish what it means and give the English equivalent, then ask your partner for one from their country. Write down the new one, and what it means, in Spanish.
Your partner is a learner too, so mistakes are expected on both sides. Ten minutes of real conversation teaches more than an hour of worrying about it.
An example you can adapt
Hoy te traigo un refrán: más vale tarde que nunca. En inglés tenemos uno igual: better late than never. Y tú, ¿me enseñas uno de tu país?
Today I have brought you a saying: más vale tarde que nunca. We have exactly the same one in English: better late than never. And you, will you teach me one from your country?
