Aula is feminine, but it takes the masculine article in the singular: el aula, not la aula. This is not an exception to gender, it is the same rule that gives Spanish el agua and el hambre - a feminine noun that starts with a stressed a- sound takes el purely to avoid two "a" sounds colliding, and every adjective and plural form still agrees as feminine: el aula grande, las aulas grandes.
