/tʃiˈleno/
Translation
Chilean
Word origin
From the country name Chile plus the Spanish demonym suffix -eno. Chile's own origin is genuinely disputed among scholars.
Other proposed origins
- Often traced to the Mapudungun chili or tchili, possibly imitating the call of a local bird, or meaning roughly 'where the land ends'. (chili (Mapudungun))
- Other accounts derive it from Quechua chiri ('cold'), or from a valley called Chili in the Aconcagua region whose name the Inca extended to the wider territory. (chiri (Quechua))
