Meet the cast

Tom is a nice man. He says money is not important. He says it a lot.

For his mum's birthday, Tom has a present. He says, "It is a song." Then he sings it. It is a long song.

For his friend, it is a hug. "A hug is better than a thing," he says. His friend says, "Good. Now I want a hug and a coat."

On Tom's birthday, Ana sings him a song. It is a very short song. Tom says, "Good. Where is my present?"

Ana does not play games. She says what she wants, and she says it first.

In a shop, a man asks, "Can I help you?" Ana says, "Yes. I want the blue coat. Not the red one."

Tom says, "My present to you is my time." Ana says, "Good. I want it now. We are going to the shop." Tom does not say it again.

Soon it is her birthday. She has a list for Tom. It has the shop, the price and the colour. Tom says, "It is not a surprise." Ana says, "No. It is a coat."

Ben is a boy. He has a new house, a mother, a father and a lot of time.

Ben does not say much. He only says what he sees. "Dad has a big hammer. Dad looks at the wall. Dad says, 'It is nothing.'"

A day later, there is water in the room. Ben says, "There is water in the room." That is all. He does not say whose fault it is.

At school, a boy asks, "Is your dad good with a hammer?" Ben thinks for a long time. He says, "He is very happy with it."

Ben's dad is a happy man. He has a hammer, a big book and no fear.

When something is broken, he does not call a man. He says, "I can do it!" Then he does it.

The door is fine now. But now the light does not work. He fixes the light. Now the water does not work.

Today, a man came to look at the roof. Dad said, "I can do it." The man said, "I know. You did it last week. That is why I am here."

Mr Hartley is a man from England. He speaks every language. It is always English.

In a shop in France, he says to a woman, "I WANT... A... COFFEE." She says nothing. He says it again, more slowly. And louder.

He thinks a person only needs a big voice. The words are not the problem.

Last week he met a man from Leeds, in the north of England. The man spoke English, but very fast, with a strong accent. Mr Hartley did not understand one word. So he said, "DO. YOU. SPEAK. ENGLISH?" The man said, "Yes. Do you?"
