How to actually learn Esperanto

Esperanto is measurably faster to learn than a national language: in a randomised Essex study, children gained far more of it per hour of teaching than a matched group learning French. But the famous claim that learning Esperanto first speeds up your later French was tested by the same group and not found. Learn it for its own speed and its own community; both are real.

The community has a word for the learner who circles beginner courses forever: la eterna komencanto, the eternal beginner. The escape is production - write a diary, speak at events, let the graded readers pull you up level by level. Recognising ten thousand words you have never once produced is the plateau; using two thousand is fluency.

Pronunciation in an afternoon; vocabulary in frequency order, learned as roots; the affixes early; graded reading at a hard ceiling; spaced repetition so nothing leaks; and speaking months before you feel ready. Each rung makes the next one pay. Knowing a word by heart is the floor, not the ceiling.
