is the brimmed hat; is the soft cap. The word does a second job that no other language asks of its headwear: Esperantists call the circumflex over ĉ ĝ ĥ ĵ ŝ a , and those five are the ĉapelitaj , the letters with hats on. That is why the ASCII workaround is nicknamed the x-system, since the missing hat gets replaced by an x. Note also that hats are worn with , the same verb as carrying.
