Translation

to depend

Word origin

From French dépendre, from Latin dependere ('to hang down from', from de plus pendere 'to hang'). English depend and pendulum hang from the same root.

Origin
Latin
Root
dependere
English cognates
depend, pendulum

Examples

.

Everything depends on the weather.

o .

The decision depends on you.

.

The children still depend on their parents.

The preposition is the whole lesson here: English depends ON, Esperanto , keeping the Latin picture of one thing hanging from another. on its own does the work of "it depends", the conversational shrug. The negative , built with ('without'), means independent, and o is independence, a word with plenty of mileage in political Esperanto. A o is a dependency, and modern computing borrowed exactly that.
