elirejo

Three pieces, all of them already known: el out of, ir go, -ej- place, -o noun. The place for going out. Elirejo.

That is eliri, to go out, with the place suffix bolted on, and the word you meet on the green sign above every door in a public building. Its opposite is enirejo, the way in, built the same way from eniri. On a motorway they become the slip roads: elirejo the exit, enirejo the entrance.

The pattern generalises immediately, which is the point of learning it here rather than memorising the word:

• eliro - the act of going out, an exit as an event
• elirejo - the door you go out through
• enirejo - the door you come in through
• haltejo - a stop (bus, tram), from halti
• lernejo - a school, from lerni

The other -ej- build in this chapter is naĝejo, a swimming pool, and the same suffix appears in parkumejo, a car park, over on parkumi. Once -ej- lands, a large slice of the signage in any Esperanto-speaking building becomes readable without a dictionary.
