Translation
railway
Word origin
Compounded inside Esperanto from fero ('iron') and vojo ('road'), on the same logic as German Eisenbahn, French chemin de fer and Spanish ferrocarril. English is the odd one out with railway.
- Origin
- Esperanto
- Root
- fero + vojo
Examples
.
The new railway links the two cities.
.
We waited by the railway while the train went past.
.
The railway goes through the mountain.
A compound you can take apart on sight: iron plus road. When two roots join, the first drops its own ending unless the word would be unpronounceable without it, so - plus gives rather than ferovojo. Both are permitted; the short one is what people actually write.
Useful relatives, all built the same way: fervoja for a railway station, o for a railway worker.
