Translation
railway station, station building
Word origin
A compound of stacio ('station'), from Latin statio ('a standing place'), plus domo ('house'): literally the station house. The pattern copies German Bahnhof and the compound has been the everyday word since the earliest texts.
- Origin
- Esperanto compound, from Latin statio + domus
- Root
- stacio + domo
- English cognates
- station, static
Examples
.
The train is waiting at the station.
.
I will wait for you in front of the station.
.
The railway station is situated in the centre of the town.
Decode it and it stays decoded: is the stop itself, the building you buy the tickets in. In practice everyone says for the whole railway station, and context does the rest.
