As an interjection is the noise you make at something disgraceful or disgusting, roughly English "ugh" or the old-fashioned "fie". Directed at a person it takes : !. Its real importance, though, is as a prefix. - marks moral contempt on the part of the speaker, and it is one of Esperanto's sharpest tools: o a wretch, o a shady business, o a swear word, o a scoundrel. Compare -, which only reverses the meaning. - adds a curled lip.
