English "stop" hides two verbs and Esperanto separates them with one letter. is intransitive: the train stops, . is you making it stop, and it needs an object. Say and you have written nonsense that most readers will still decode, which is why the error survives so long. There is also a distinction from i: arrests motion, i ends an activity.
