Translation

to throw, to hurl, to cast

Examples

.

He threw the stone into the river.

!

Do not throw the paper on the floor!

rigardon .

She threw a glance at the door.

.

The boys threw and caught the hat.

.

The tree cast a long shadow.

is transitive and pulls the accusative of direction along behind it, because thrown things go somewhere: , , . Get the -n wrong and the stone is merely in the river being thrown about, which is a different picture. Sin is to hurl oneself, forĵeti is to throw away and is one of the most used for- compounds in the language, and ĵeto is a single throw. The figurative uses match English closely enough: you can cast a glance and cast a shadow.
