The cooking-art. It really is that, and it is a delight. English reaches for French and says cuisine, or reaches for Latin and says culinary art. Esperanto takes kuiri, a word you learned at rank 1,046, and arto, a word you learned at rank 630, and puts them next to each other. . Nothing borrowed, nothing memorised, and a learner who has never seen the word before can read it at first glance. This is the single best argument the language makes for itself, and it makes it in four syllables.

Two senses, both live. It is cookery as a discipline - what you study, what a kuirlibro is a book of - and it is a national cuisine: , , . English needs cookery for the first and cuisine for the second; Esperanto uses one word and lets the adjective sort it out.

The family is enormous and entirely predictable. Kuiri takes nearly every suffix in the language and each result means exactly what the pieces say. is a cook by trade, o a head chef, o a kitchen, o a cooking utensil, o a cooked dish, i to be in the process of cooking, kuirlibro a cookbook. The manner verbs compound the same way: bolkuiri to boil, vaporkuiri to steam, ŝelkuiri to cook in the skin. Beside them sit the separate roots for the other methods - baki to bake, friti to fry, rosti to roast, boli to boil.

Where the rest of the kitchen lives. The vocabulary of ingredients, methods and mealtimes is collected in kuirarto kaj manĝo, which is the chapter article this word is named after. This band brings in two of its staples at once: ajlo and, at rank 2,671, cepo.
