Borrowed from English lift, which goes back to Old Norse lypta, 'to raise', and is related to loft. Esperanto took the noun rather than the verb.

One of the small number of Esperanto roots taken straight from English rather than from Latin or German. is the machine; the verb for raising something is levi, and the two are unrelated in Esperanto even though they mean nearly the same thing in English.
So do not build it. o would be a lever, the tool for lifting, not the box that carries you up. Some older texts use ascensoro, from French; is the ordinary word now.
