Two prepositions, two shades. fastens one thing onto another, which is the horse and the tree. joins two things as equals, which is the river and the sea. Both are correct; picking the wrong one is not fatal but it reads oddly.
-- gives for the tie, cord or bond, and ligo is a link or a league in the political sense. i unties, kunligi binds together, and interligi interconnects. The metaphorical use in the last two examples is as natural in Esperanto as in English.
