rompi

Rompi is transitive, always. Something breaks something else. When the thing simply falls apart on its own you need rompiĝi: la glaso rompiĝis, the glass broke. English lets one verb do both jobs and Esperanto refuses, so la fenestro rompis says the window broke something, which it did not.

The root is productive. Interrompi is to interrupt, literally to break into, rompo is a break or a breach, and disrompi smashes a thing to pieces rather than merely cracking it.
