Transitive and blunt: the thing deserved is a plain object with -n, no preposition anywhere. Note that it cuts both ways, so you can a punishment as readily as a reward. It overlaps with the suffix --, and often you can choose: and a say much the same thing, with the suffix version tighter. Merito is the merit itself, and senmerita describes praise nobody earned.
