The most useful thing here is not the noun but the adverb ŝerce, jokingly, which does the work of the whole English phrase "as a joke". Esperanto reaches for a single adverb where English builds a prepositional phrase, and getting comfortable with that is half of sounding natural. The verb is intransitive and takes . Note the hat on the first letter: ŝ is the "sh" sound, so this is SHER-tso, with the c again pronounced "ts". Written in the x-system it is sxerco.
