A smile in Esperanto is a small laugh: plus the diminutive --. That is the language showing its working, and it means you get o for a smile as a noun and for smiling as an adjective without learning anything new. Go the other way with -- and i is to roar with laughter. You smile at someone with , not with a direct object, since is intransitive.
