ŝuldi

Two objects, two treatments: the thing owed is the direct object with -n, the creditor takes al. English says "I owe you ten francs" with both bare, so the trap is writing mi ŝuldas vin, which claims you owe somebody's actual person. The noun ŝuldo is a debt, ŝuldanto the debtor and ŝuldigi means to put someone in your debt. Figurative use works exactly as in English - you can owe your life, your success or your thanks to somebody.
