One of the few American roots. Esperanto's vocabulary is overwhelmingly Romance with a Germanic and Slavic seasoning, so the handful of words that came from elsewhere are worth noticing. Tomato travelled from Nahuatl tomatl through Spanish into every European language and then into Esperanto essentially unchanged. Ĉokolado took the same road; so did avokado.

Legomo, not frukto. A tomato is botanically a fruit and culinarily a vegetable, and Esperanto quietly sides with the kitchen: you will meet it in the legomo list, next to terpomo and the onions, not with the apples. Nobody will correct you for calling it a frukto in a botany lesson, but on a market stall it is a legomo.

In the kitchen. Tomata supo is tomato soup, tomata suko tomato juice, and tomatujo is the plant that grew it - the -uj- suffix again, the same one that turns pomo into an apple tree. The colour word is ruĝa, and if you want the unripe one, verda tomato does exactly what it looks like.
