From Greek zone, a girdle worn round the waist, which reached Esperanto through Latin zona. English zone travelled the same road, keeping only the map sense and losing the belt.

One root, two senses that English splits: the leather thing round your waist and the band drawn across a map. Both are . The verb zoni is to gird or to encircle, so a wall can zoni a garden. Note that is a belt you wear, not a mechanical belt in a machine.
