French · Chapter 14 · Lesson 17 · Phrase session

At the cafe

Enough to order, to say it was good, and to mean it.

Why these go together

Je voudrais is the single most useful thing in this set. It is the conditional of vouloir, and it is the difference between asking for a coffee and demanding one - the same gap English has between I want and I would like.

  • Je voudrais un café.

    I would like a coffee.

  • C'est très bon.

    It is very good.

  • Pour moi, de l'eau.

    Water for me.

  • J'ai faim.

    I am hungry.

    Literally: I have hunger

  • On va manger.

    Let us eat.

    Literally: one goes to eat
