neuf or nouveau?

One means unused. The other means new to you, which is not the same claim.

The rule

neuf means BRAND new, never used, fresh from the factory. nouveau means new TO YOU, whether or not the thing is old. A secondhand car is nouveau for its buyer and it is certainly not neuf.
