Ch 1 · Lesson 28

How German numbers work: the teens and the tens

is three-ten and is four-ty, much as in English. Two of them lose letters, and thirty has the only ß.

The short version

and lose letters

, .

She is sixteen, he is seventeen.
Why?

Six and seven shrink when they join or -zig: drops the s of , and and drop the -en of . But in 21 to 99 the unit keeps its full form, so sechsundsechzig has an s at the front and none at the back.

The whole system on one screen

Three colours build every number to 99: the unit, the joining , and the ten.

siebenundvierzig. - I am forty-seven.

The teens: the unit plus zehn

From thirteen to nineteen German does what English does: the unit, then ten.

Two of them lose letters, and these are the classic spelling traps:

sechzehn - sixteen: the s of sechs drops out
siebzehn - seventeen: the -en of sieben drops out
  • . - She is sixteen.
  • . - He is seventeen.

The dropped s changes the sound too: in the ch is the soft ch of , not the ks of .

The tens: -zig, and one ß

The tens add -zig to the unit, the same ending as English -ty:

Three need watching:

  • (20), not zweizig: two has changed shape. . - I am twenty.
  • (30) is the only ten that ends in -ßig instead of -zig. . - He is thirty.
  • and shrink exactly like their teens. . - She is seventy.

The -ig at the end is said like the ch in in standard German, so sounds like tsvan-tsich. In the south, Austria and Switzerland you will hear a k instead. Both are correct.

Going further: Null to zwölf: the words to learn and the rest of the guide, when you want them. This lesson does not need them.
