Der, die or das: the article is the whole problem
English has one word for the and German has six. They mark gender AND the noun's job in the sentence, which is why you never learn a German noun without its article.

Never learn a German noun without its article
Learning Tag teaches you almost nothing useful. Learning der Tag teaches you the word, because the gender is a property you cannot derive and will need in every sentence the noun appears in. Treat the article as part of the spelling and the hardest thing about German quietly stops being hard.

Der and den are the same word doing two jobs
Der marks a masculine noun that is the subject; den marks the same noun when it is the object. Change one letter and you change who did what, whatever order the words come in. If you are not reading the article, you are not reading the sentence.
