Read a Vulgate chapter on your own
You have read John 1:1-5 with help. Now read on alone, to the most famous verse in the chapter.
Open John 1 in the Vulgate and read verses 6 to 14 without a translation: John the Baptist, the light, and verse 14, Et Verbum caro factum est, et habitavit in nobis. This text prints the older spelling with j (Joannes, ejus). Then check yourself against any English Bible.
Open the site and have a look around. You won't understand most of it yet - that's fine. Spotting even one or two words you already know on a real page is the point.
Read it in Latin
Fuit homo missus a Deo, cui nomen erat Joannes.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
