What is commonly done is not always right.
Communiter is the adverb of communis and it pulls in two directions at once. One is "jointly, in common": how property is held, how a monastic community lives, what nobody owns alone.
The other is "generally, in the loose sense", and it is set directly against proprie. Communiter loquendo means speaking broadly, without technical precision. Scholastic writers lean hard on this pair and a whole argument can turn on which of the two a term is being used in, so it is worth fixing them together rather than one at a time.
