Simul is an adverb, not a preposition, and that is the mistake to avoid: together with someone needs simul cum and the ablative, never simul on its own governing a case. Followed by ac, by atque, or by nothing at all, it turns into a conjunction meaning as soon as, and the clause then normally takes the perfect indicative. It underlies simultaneous and assemble, and by way of Late Latin the whole family of simulate.
