takes the ACCUSATIVE. It also works as a bare adverb, "nearby, alongside", which is what it is doing when no noun follows it.
The classical sense is physical closeness, tighter than : right beside, touching or nearly so. The sense "according to, in conformity with" is late and overwhelmingly Christian, and it is the reason this word sits so high in our list. Jerome uses where Cicero would have written or ex, and the gospel titles fix the pattern for a thousand years: evangelium Matthaeum. Reading Caesar, expect the wall. Reading a church text, expect "according to". It survives as Italian giusta and French jouxte.
