Nihil is indeclinable: the form never changes, so where a genitive or an ablative is wanted Latin supplies nullius rei and nulla re instead. It takes a partitive genitive for the thing there is none of, so 'nothing new' is nihil novi, not nihil novum. Used adverbially in the accusative it means 'not at all'. The contracted form nil is the same word and is common in verse.
