Meet the Confucius Institutes
A Chinese-government-funded network of language and culture centres, usually hosted by a university. Know what they are before you go looking for one.
Confucius Institutes teach Mandarin and run cultural events, usually in partnership with a host university. They are funded by the Chinese government: since 2020 the network has been run by the Chinese International Education Foundation, which publishes the portal at ci.cn. Many have closed in recent years over concerns about state influence - in the United States, almost all of the roughly one hundred that existed in 2019 have gone - so there may not be one near you. Have a look at the portal, then compare what is on offer locally: a university Chinese department, a Chinese community school or a language exchange will often serve you just as well.
Open the site and have a look around. You won't understand most of it yet - that's fine. Spotting even one or two words you already know on a real page is the point.
