复活节(fù huó jié) - Easter in Mandarin

复活节 (fù huó jié) is Easter, built from 复活 (fù huó, to be resurrected, to come back to life) and 节 (jié, festival). 复 (fù) means "again, to repeat" and 活 (huó) means "to live", so 复活 (fù huó) reads literally as "to live again", a direct translation of the Christian idea the festival marks.

As a Western festival explained to Mandarin learners rather than a Chinese one, 复活节 (fù huó jié) sits alongside 圣诞节 (shèng dàn jié), Christmas, in vocabulary lists, and both take the same 节 (jié) ending as native festivals like 春节 (chūn jié) and 端午节 (duān wǔ jié).

Painted eggs and egg hunts translate straightforwardly: 复活节的时候小朋友喜欢找彩蛋 (fù huó jié de shí hou xiǎo péng yǒu xǐ huan zhǎo cǎi dàn), "at Easter, children like hunting for painted eggs", using 找 (zhǎo), to look for, and 彩蛋 (cǎi dàn), literally "coloured egg".
