向前走(xiàng qián zǒu) - go straight ahead, go forward in Mandarin

向前走 (xiàng qián zǒu) means "go straight ahead" or "walk forward". 向 (xiàng) means "towards", 前 (qián) means "front, ahead" and 走 (zǒu) means "to walk", so the phrase is literally "towards-front walk", exactly the instruction you would give someone who has stopped at a junction.

It is a staple of giving directions, usually paired with a turn: 向前走 (xiàng qián zǒu)，然后左转 (ránhòu zuǒ zhuǎn), "go straight ahead, then turn left". English speakers sometimes reach for 走前面 (zǒu qiánmiàn) by analogy with "go in front", but that is not idiomatic; the fixed order is always 向前走 (xiàng qián zǒu), direction word before the verb.

Don't confuse it with 往前走 (wǎng qián zǒu), which means almost exactly the same thing. 向 (xiàng) and 往 (wǎng) both mean "towards" and are largely interchangeable in this phrase, so hearing either is fine, but 向前走 (xiàng qián zǒu) is the form to produce yourself when learning directions.
