Spanish · Chapter 13 · Lesson 9 · Common mistake
tan or tanto?
One goes with a description, the other with an amount.
The rule
tan goes before an ADJECTIVE or an adverb: tan grande, tan rápido. tanto goes with a noun, or straight after a verb, and it counts rather than describes: tanto tiempo, trabaja tanto. If the next word says what something is like, use tan; if it says how much, use tanto.
