este or esto?
One points at a thing. The other points at a situation.
The rule
points at a masculine noun and agrees with it: , . points at no noun at all - an idea, a mess, something you cannot name yet. It has no gender because there is nothing to agree with, which is why cannot exist. ( can also stand alone for a masculine noun you have already named, , but never stands for a noun.)
