Ch 20 · Lesson 9

Me alegro de venir: the same person, and siento que

When the person who feels also acts, use + infinitive. and can report a fact instead.

The short version

Same person feels and acts? Use the infinitive

.

I'm sorry I'm late.
Why?

+ subjunctive needs someone else to do the second verb: . When the person who feels also acts, drop the and keep the : , . And + indicative means I sense, not I'm sorry.

Same person: the infinitive

subjunctive, a reactioninfinitive, the same personindicative, a reportWhat do the colours mean?

As with wishes, + subjunctive needs someone else to do the second verb. When the person who feels also acts, drop the and use the infinitive:

Who actsSpanishEnglish
someone else .I'm glad you' coming.
same person .I'm glad to come.
someone else .I like it that you cook.
same person .I like cooking.
someone else .I'm afraid you'll miss the train.
same person .I'm afraid of missing the train.

The of and stays; only the goes. with nobody in particular takes the infinitive:

  • . - It's a shame not to be able to go.
  • . - It's a shame you can't go.

Siento que and me temo que

Two verbs have a second meaning that reports a fact, and the mood shows which one you mean:

MeaningSpanishEnglish
sorry .I'm sorry you' ill.
sense .I sense something is wrong.
fear .I'm afraid we'll be late.
bad news .I'm afraid there are no tables.

Me is the polite way to break bad news, like English I'm afraid that: it reports, so it takes the indicative. Real fear takes the subjunctive.

Mistakes English speakers make

WrongRightWhy
me a true fact still takes it
the same person: infinitive
me careful Spanish keeps the
sorry needs the subjunctive
fear takes the subjunctive

is not ungrammatical: it means I sense you' ill, which is rarely what you want to say.
