Spanish · Chapter 4 · Lesson 10 · Common mistake
por or para?
Both become for in English, which is why English speakers guess. The full lesson comes in chapter 13; this is the shape of it.
The rule
para points FORWARD: a destination, a recipient, a purpose, a deadline. por points BACK or THROUGH: a cause, a route, an exchange, a duration. Roughly, para is where it is going and por is why it happened.
