Demonstratives: este, ese, aquel

This, that, and that-over-there. Gender + number agreement with the noun being pointed at.

The short version

The demonstrative English speakers never reach for

Spanish splits distance three ways where English splits it two. Este is near me, ese is near you, aquel is far from both of us in space or in time. Because English has no third word, learners squash everything into ese. If the thing is across the room or years back, it is aquel.

Aquellos años fueron los mejores de mi vida.

Those years were the best of my life.
