Ch 45 · Lesson 10

éxito, salida or suceso?

Three words that look like English words they have nothing to do with.

The rule

is success, not exit. is the exit. suceso is an event or an incident (the crime-and-accidents page of a newspaper is sucesos). You will hear suceso for success in parts of Latin America, under English influence, but is the safe word everywhere. The three make a closed trap: an English speaker reaching for exit says , reaching for success says suceso, and is confidently wrong both times.
