The possessive house: my, your, his, her

Whose is it? My, your, his, her, its, our and their, and the little 's that says Tom's house.

The short version

His or her comes from the owner

In English, his and her depend on who owns the thing, not on the thing. A man's mother is his mother; a woman's father is her father. Look at the owner and the choice is easy.

Tom and his mother. Ana and her father.

Tom is a man, so his. Ana is a woman, so her.

Its or it's: try saying it is

Its and it's sound the same. It's means it is. Its means of it. If you can say it is in the sentence, write it's; if not, write its.

It's late. The dog wants its food.

It is late (it's); the food of the dog (its).

That's the gist. The full article goes deeper - more examples, the edge cases, the why - and the practice below scores like a vocabulary session and earns the same XP.
