Ch 1 · Lesson 31

Tom's thing: 's, its or it's, and whose

Add 's to a name: Tom's house. Its or it's: try saying it is. And whose to ask who the owner is.

The short version

Its or it's: try saying it is

. .

It is late (it's); the food of the dog (its).
Why?

Its and it's sound the same. It's means it is. Its means of it. If you can say it is in the sentence, write it's; if not, write its.

Name + 's

For a name or a noun, add 's.

Tom + 's: the car belongs to Tom
  • Tom's (the car belongs to Tom)
  • Ana's (the phone belongs to Ana)
  • 's (the name of my mother)
  • 's (the hat belongs to the man)
A woman with long hair and a bow stands on the grass holding an open green umbrella over her head and a dog on a red lead; a red car is parked behind her.
  1. Ana
  2. Ana's
  3. Ana's

The dog and the car belong to Ana: Ana's dog, Ana's car.

English almost never says the car of Tom. With people, use 's: Is this Tom's car?

Plural nouns: s'

If the noun is plural and ends in s, add only the apostrophe.

One ownerMany owners
's '
's '

The boy's room belongs to one boy. The boys' room belongs to two or more boys. Plurals with no s take 's: 's , 's .

Its or it's?

These two sound the same. They mean different things.

WordMeansExample
The dog wants its food.
It's late.

The test: can you say it is? Then write it's: It's late = It is late. If not, write its: its food is not it is food.

The same trap: your (your bag) and you're (you're late = you are late), their (their house) and they're (they're here = they are here).

Whose?

To ask about the owner, use whose: Whose bag is this? (Who is the owner of this bag?) It's Tom's. (It is Tom's bag.)
