From Latin dux, genitive ducis, a leader, from ducere ('to lead'), by way of French duc and Italian duca. A Roman dux led an army long before the word settled into a rank of nobility, and the same verb sits inside conduct, educate and duke itself.

slots into the ladder between princo above and grafo below. The feminine is o, his territory is a o or dukolando, and duka is the adjective. Note that the root is the same Latin ducere that produced duŝo, one leading men and the other leading water down a pipe, which is the sort of accident that makes etymology worth reading.
